The Gods Are Not to Blame by Ola Rotimi, presented by Utopia Theatre at The Steamworks, Sheffield, on Saturday 21 November 2026

Utopia Theatre brings African theatre, arts and culture to Sheffield with The Gods Are Not to Blame

Utopia Theatre is inviting audiences to experience a theatrical presentation of Ola Rotimi’s The Gods Are Not to Blame, directed by Dr Mojisola Kareem, at The Steamworks in Sheffield on Saturday 21 November 2026.

Rooted in Yoruba culture and storytelling traditions, The Gods Are Not to Blame explores fate, power, family, responsibility and the consequences of human choices. Inspired by the ancient Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex, Ola Rotimi reimagines the story within the imagined Yoruba community of Kutuje, where King Odewale is forced to confront a prophecy that threatens his family and kingdom.

From 5pm to 6pm, audiences will experience selected scenes from the play, brought to life by professional actors alongside community and young performers, with live music, movement and dance. The presentation offers audiences an opportunity to experience the work as it develops and discover the creative vision behind Utopia Theatre’s planned full production in 2028.

The theatrical presentation forms part of a wider afternoon of activity at The Steamworks. From 2pm to 5pm, Utopia Theatre’s Cultural Courtyard will celebrate African arts and culture through music, food, independent traders and cultural activities. Audiences are encouraged to come early, bring friends and family, explore the activities and enjoy the atmosphere, although visitors are also welcome to arrive specifically for the theatrical presentation at 5pm.

Following the presentation, from 6pm to 6.25pm, audiences will be invited to Meet the Creative Team, joining Director Dr Mojisola Kareem and members of the creative team for a conversation about the work, its creative development and the journey towards the full production.

The event is open to families, and the selected scenes being presented are suitable for children, offering an opportunity for audiences of different generations to experience African theatre, music and culture together.

The event reflects Utopia Theatre’s ongoing commitment to celebrating African storytelling, developing ambitious theatrical work and creating opportunities for communities to connect through the arts.
