Utopia Theatre presents · A first look
The Gods Are Not to Blame
Written by Ola Rotimi · Directed by Dr Mojisola Kareem
An afternoon of African theatre, music, food and community, and a first look at scenes from our new production of Ola Rotimi's classic play.
Ola Rotimi's celebrated Yoruba retelling of Oedipus Rex follows King Odewale, a ruler bound by a prophecy he cannot escape. Rich with Yoruba storytelling, proverb and ritual, it remains one of the great plays of African theatre.
This is an exclusive first look at a production in development. Selected scenes are performed by professional actors alongside community and young performers, with live music, movement and dance: a rare chance to see the work as it takes shape, as Utopia Theatre builds towards a full production.
