Echoes of Time: Sharing stories of aging through art, music and performance

A moving new documentary is shining a spotlight on the lives of Sheffield’s older generation, capturing a unique initiative that blends personal history with the performing arts.

The documentary, titled Echoes of Time, follows a group of local older adults who participated in a series of innovative, arts-based workshops at Utopia Theatre in Sheffield, from September to December 2024.

The project is based around a series of intimate life-history and go-along interviews. Building on those personal accounts, the participants came together to share their stories of aging in Sheffield through music, movement, poetry, storytelling, and live performance.

Facilitated by a team of talented artists from Utopia Theatre, the weekly sessions created a safe and inclusive space for creativity, community, and self-expression.

The documentary, produced by filmmaker Sean Lovell with support from Ai Narapol, captures this entire creative process. It chronicles the journey all the way through to a final sharing event, where participants performed live for an audience of friends and family to celebrate identity, memory, and connection across generations.
