Utopia Theatre have received funding from the BFI to host an African and African Caribbean Film Festival in 2026.
 

Screen Horizons will see 6 films screened at The Curzon Cinema in Sheffield between January and March.

Following each screening, we will be joined by a panel of guests including film makers, artists and screen writers from the creative industries, community volunteers and members of the  Utopia team.

Mami Wata is a black and white fantasy thriller released in 2023, written by C.J. ‘Fiery’ Obasi. Starring Evelyne Ily Juhen, Uzoamaka Anuinoh, Kelechi Udegbe and Emeka Amakeze.

I Am Not A Witch

I am Not a Witch is the 2017 BAFTA award-winning debut feature of Zambian-Welsh filmmaker Rungano Nyoni. It tells the story of Shula, a 9-year-old orphan in Zambia accused of witchcraft and sent to a government-run witch camp. The movie blends deadpan humour with surrealism and is a social satire on traditional beliefs and modern exploitation.

Rye Lane is a 2023 romantic comedy directed by Raine Allen-Miller in her feature directorial debut from a screenplay by Nathan Bryon and Tom Melia. Set in London and named after Rye Lane Market it stars David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah as two strangers who have a chance encounter, after having both been through recent breakups, and spend the day getting to know each other.

Yardie is a 2018 British crime drama film directed by Idris Elba in his feature directorial debut. It stars Aml Ameen, Shantol Jackson, Stephen Graham, Fraser James, Sheldon Shepherd, and Everaldo Creary. It is based on the novel by Jamaican-born writer Victor Headley and was screened at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White is a 2023 Nigerian romantic drama written and directed by Babatunde Apalowo in his directorial debut. The film stars Tope Tedela, Riyo David, Martha Ehinome Orhiere and Uchechika Elumelu. It was shown at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival and won the Teddy Award for best LGBTQ-themed feature film.

Queen of Glory

Queen of Glory is a 2021 American comedy-drama film written, directed by and starring Nana Mensah in her directorial debut. Set in the Bronx in New York, it depicts a Ghanaian-American scientist who inherits a Christian bookstore from her deceased mother. The film had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in 2021, where Mensah received the Best New Narrative Director prize and the Special Jury Prize for Artistic Expression.
