Introducing the Utopia Theatre Community Ensemble

We are thrilled to introduce the Utopia Community Ensemble, a vibrant initiative designed to nurture and support aspiring creatives in Sheffield to become independent in our ever growing industry. Our mission is to develop, train, and provide hands-on experience for individuals eager to explore their talents in the performing arts.

The Utopia Community Ensemble offers a unique opportunity for participants to:

Bring your own stories to life through self-directed, produced, written and acted community performances that showcase the skills you have honed during our programme.

Learn

Gain valuable skills in all aspects of theatre production, including singing and vocals, directing and devising, movement and choreography, and more.

Connect

Become part of a supportive community of like-minded creatives and be in with the chance to join the talent pool for future Utopia Theatre projects.

Our Current Programme:
16-week skills development

We’re passionate about supporting the creative development of our community, which is why we’re teaming up with a whole bunch of industry professionals over a 16 week programme to deliver skills-based practical workshops for our Community Ensemble to level-up their talent.

Weeks 1-2

Voice and music development led by musical professionals Kayefi Osha and Ajide Ayedemi (supported by local vocalists Sarafina Maneus and Victoria Marrett). Participants will learn vocal techniques, rehearse multilingual songs from Utopia’s upcoming production, Crown of Blood, and explore characterisation through music.

Weeks 3-5

Movement and choreography training led by Lati Saka and assistant dance facilitators. Sessions will develop body awareness, ensemble coordination, and stage presence. The outcome of these sessions will be the creation of two ensemble movement pieces for the end of programme Community Ensemble  production.

Week 6

Text analysis session. Deputy Artistic Director of Utopia Theatre, Mo Korede, will lead this session and participants will learn to break down and analyse classic texts, diving into how they would adapt and interpret a story for new audiences.

Weeks 7-9

Writing skills workshops, exploring both playwriting and poetry. Led by Mo Korede and Oladipo Agboluaje (Crown of Blood writer) Participants will undergo training on various styles of writing, and use their previous knowledge of adaptations, as well as other forms of writing, to bring stories to life.

Weeks 10-12

Experience a masterclass on directing with the Deputy Artistic Director of Utopia Theatre, Mo Korede. This will give participants an in-depth understanding on various lenses of direction and tackling different performance styles.

Weeks 13-16

Devising workshops led by Mo Korede. Participants will gain an understanding of devising and methods of devising. Using their skills and with the support of the Utopia team, participants will devise their own response to Crown of Blood, which will be shared at the Utopia Creative Hub at the end of the programme.
