Mo Korede takes to the stage as Utopia’s new Deputy Artistic Director
Utopia Theatre announces appointment of new Deputy Artistic Director
Utopia Theatre is delighted to announce the appointment of Mo Korede as its new Deputy Artistic Director, effective from 1st August 2025.
This new role marks a significant step in Utopia Theatre’s continued growth and strategic commitment to artistic leadership development, succession planning, and innovation in African-centred theatre practice.
Mo Korede brings a wealth of experience as a director, dramaturg, and cultural producer, with a strong track record of championing marginalised voices and creating compelling, socially resonant work. With roots in both the UK and Nigeria, Mo’s vision aligns powerfully with Utopia Theatre’s mission to celebrate and reimagine African theatre for contemporary audiences, both nationally and internationally.
Get to know Mo...
Mo Korede is a Black British/Nigerian director, theatre-maker, and writer with a bold vision. His work interrogates identity, heritage, and power through a poetic and politically charged lens. With over nine years of professional directing experience, Mo has staged critically acclaimed productions at venues including Theatre Peckham, Theatro Technis, and the Lyric Hammersmith– notably Cleopatra’s Antony (2024), OUR FATHER (2023), and Elektra (2022).
A graduate of Birkbeck’s MFA Theatre Directing program and Royal Central School of Speech and Drama’s Advanced Theatre Practice MA, Mo combines rigorous craft with radical imagination. He is also a passionate facilitator, leading workshops for the Almeida, Hackney Showroom and Lyric Hammersmith’s youth companies, nurturing the next generation of artists.
Mo’s practice is deeply collaborative, whether as a director, dramaturg, or mentor. His dual heritage fuels a transnational perspective, reflected in his vibrant storytelling and commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices.
“Mo joins us at an exciting moment in our journey as we expand our artistic programme, invest in new talent, and deepen our local and international impact.
His passion for storytelling, combined with his collaborative spirit and deep cultural insight, make him the ideal partner as we shape the future of Utopia Theatre together.”
As Deputy Artistic Director, Mo will work closely with Mojisola Kareem and the wider team, supporting creative development, artist engagement, and strategic planning, whilst also contributing to upcoming productions, youth and community programmes, and international partnerships.

Mo added: “I’m thrilled to be joining Utopia Theatre as the new Deputy Artistic Director at such an exciting time. Utopia’s bold style of storytelling and commitment to centring African and diasporic narratives have long inspired me, and I’ve deeply admired the company’s vision under Mojisola’s leadership. Now, I’m eager to work alongside her- supporting Utopia’s growth. We begin with Crown of Blood, a thrilling reimagining of Macbeth that epitomises the daring, culturally rooted theatre I’m passionate about.
This role marks a major step in my career- not just as a move into senior leadership, but as an opportunity to champion African stories on a bigger stage. Utopia’s blend of artistic excellence and community-driven practice aligns perfectly with my belief in theatre as a force for empowerment and transformation. That’s why this feels like the right moment, both artistically and personally, to take this leap. I can’t wait to contribute to Utopia’s vision, champion exciting new work, and work to amplify even more voices from the diaspora in the process.”
