“Our Stories Connect Us”
On Sunday, January 17th, Utopia Theatre will partner with the James Ene Henshaw Foundation and a stellar cast for a rehearsed online reading of the classic African play “This is Our Chance” by James Ene Henshaw. The cast includes Patrice Naiambana (Barbershop Chronicles -National Theatre) and Anni Domingo (Three Sisters -National Theatre). The production will be followed by a Q&A moderated by award-winning playwright Zodwa Nyoni.
This Is our Chance, is the first full-length play by an African author published internationally, in the English language. Since its publication in 1956, it has gone on to become one of the classics of African drama, read widely and performed in schools and colleges across the English-speaking Commonwealth. This online reading will mark the first of Utopia Theatre’s Creative Hub projects in 2021. Last year, the Creative Hub gave so many people access to a community at a time when so many were isolated and lonely. Early 2021 has so far demonstrated that we are not out of the woods yet, and so we are renewing our commitment to continue to provide our community with entertainment, culture and community events through the digital space.
We’re honoured to be able to work on this first project with The James Ene Henshaw Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to maintaining and promoting the literary legacy of James Ene Henshaw, a pioneer of African drama and one of the most popular, if not critical playwright to have emerged from the African continent.
